THE PERSONALITY OF A TREBORWOLF DOG

THE ONE COMMENT THAT A GREAT MANY OF MY CUSTOMERS TELL ME IS THAT THEIR DOG IS THE SMARTEST DOG THAT THEY HAVE EVER KNOWN, AND SOMETIMES IS ALMOST HUMAN.OR THE BEST DOG THEY HAVE EVER OWNED.

1500 OF OUR CUSTOMERS WERE SENT A SURVEY TO DETERMINE THEIR HAPPINESS WITH THEIR DOG. THEY WERE ASKED TO MEASURE OVER 30 DIFFERENT PARAMETERS CONCERNING THEIR DOG'S POTENTIAL WORTH. EACH CUSTOMER RATED THEIR DOG'S CHARACTERISTICS ON A 1 TO 10 POINT SYSTEM. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT WE HAVE ACHIEVED OUR GOAL IN CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. THE NUMBER ONE ATTRIBUTE WAS PERSONALITY, FOLLOWED BY POINTING ABILITY, AND RETRIEVING INSTINCT, IN DESCENDING ORDER.

I BEGAN BREEDING DRAHTHAARS IN 1968. MY GOAL AS A BREEDER WAS TO PRODUCE A DOG THAT HAS THE CAPACITY TO BE A LOVING HOUSE-DOG & COMPANION AS WELL AS AN EXCEPTIONAL HUNTER. A DOG THAT COULD MATCH THE BEST ENGLISH POINTER AT POINTING, MATCH THE BEST CHESAPEAKE RETRIEVER IN THE WATER, TRACK LIKE A HOUND, AND HAVE THE NATURE OF A COLLIE. MY EMPHASIS IS TO PRODUCE A DOG BRED FOR THE AMERICAN PUBLIC. A DOG PRIMARILY USED FOR UPLAND BIRDS AND WATERFOWL AND STILL BEHAVE IN THE HOUSE AS A PET FOR THE OTHER 8 MONTHS OF THE YEAR.

DOGS USED IN EUROPE DEMAND STRONGER INSTINCTS OF SHARPNESS (THE INSTINCT TO KILL) AND TRACKING ABILITY. THE EUROPEAN EXAMS PLACE MORE EMPHASIS ON SUCH CHARACTERISTICS. THEIR ADVANCED TESTING EMPHASIZES DOGS WHICH ARE OBEDIENT AND POSSESS GENETIC POTENTIAL FOR TRACKING. MOST OF THE HUNTING IS RESTRICTED TO RESERVES OWNED BY THE WEALTHY. THE DOGS OUR USED MAINLY "AFTER THE SHOT". A "DRIVEN" PHEASANT HUNT HAS THE HUNTER WITH HIS DOG AT HIS SIDE, WAITING IN A BLIND. THE BIRDS ARE FLUSHED BY DRIVERS (MEN) TOWARD THE AWAITING GUNS. THE DOGS ARE TRAINED TO FETCH THE FALLEN GAME, ON COMMAND.

IN AMERICA, MOST OF THE HUNTING IS DONE ON FARMS AND RANCHES. PUBLIC HUNTING GROUNDS HAVE ALSO BECOME A FAVORITE. PRIVATE HUNTING PRESERVES ARE AVAILABLE FOR THOSE WHO CAN AFFORD IT. A DOG THAT IS "TOUGH" IS NOT A DESIRABLE CHARACTERISTIC. HE IS A LIABILITY IN BOTH HIS NEIGHBORHOOD AS WELL AS A HUNTING PRESERVE.

THE TRACKING OF LARGE GAME IN AMERICA IS VERY LIMITED, AND IN MOST CASES NOT ALLOWED. A BREEDING PROGRAM WHICH EMPHASISES THE TRACKING ABILITY HAS MUCH LESS IMPORTANCE FOR THE AMERICAN HUNTER. SUCH A DOG WILL NEED TO WORK A TRAIL WITH A LOW HEAD AND FOCUS ON THE TRACK. WHEN HUNTING UPLAND BIRDS, A DOG WHICH FOCUSES ON AIR SCENT IS FAR SUPERIOR AT LOCATING AND POINTING BIRDS. DOGS THAT TRACK THE GAME WILL HAVE A GREATER TENDENCY TO " BUMP" OR FLUSH THE BIRDS.

IF TRACKING GAME IS YOUR SPORT, THEN I WOULD SUGGEST ONE BUY A GOOD TRACKING HOUND;  IN AMERICA, THEIR ARE MANY!
